Progress on the Schoonard to Crane Highway, a vital infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in West Demerara, is moving forward smoothly, according to Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal.
With an estimated cost of 11.8 billion dollars, this four-lane highway project is expected to be completed by mid-year.
Minister Croal provided updates on the project during a recent housing drive in Region Four, stating that the construction is divided into thirteen lots, with only one lot lagging behind schedule.
Efforts are being made to accelerate progress by implementing both night and day work shifts.
Minister Croal estimated that the overall completion percentage stands close to 70%, taking into account that the roundabout is yet to be finished.
In addition to the highway project, Minister Croal shared insights into housing development in Palmyra, Berbice.
The procurement phase is currently underway to engage contractors for the construction of homes tailored for young professionals, similar to those being built in Silica City.
Once the procurement phase is completed, construction of the houses will commence promptly.
Last year, President Irfaan Ali outlined the government’s ambitious plans to develop Palmyra, envisioning the construction of 700 homes catering to various income groups.
The community is slated for transformation into an urban hub, complete with amenities such as a stadium, hotels, malls, and a massive private gated community.
With these infrastructure and housing initiatives, the government aims to enhance connectivity, improve living standards, and foster economic development in Guyana.
