Guyanese Urged to Reject Racism and Division Amidst Calls for Boycotts

In response to mounting calls for racial division and boycotts targeting businesses aligned with the government’s development agenda, Guyanese officials have issued a firm call to action against racism and discrimination.

People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Councillors Steven Jacobs and Alfonso De Armas took a stand against these divisive tactics during a recent discussion, urging citizens to prioritize unity and inclusivity.

During an appearance on the Let’s Talk program, Councillor Jacobs, representing the PPP on the M&CC, refuted allegations of racism in Guyana.

He pointed to government initiatives like the housing program and the annual Because We Care cash grant as evidence of efforts to benefit citizens from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

Jacobs highlighted the keen interest shown by Guyanese in the diaspora regarding the country’s ongoing developments.

Echoing Jacobs’ sentiments, Councillor De Armas condemned recent calls for boycotts targeting Afro-Guyanese businesses that engaged with President Irfaan Ali during his visit to New York.

De Armas denounced these actions as hypocritical and divisive, emphasizing the importance of unity and shared values among Guyanese.

He underscored that political affiliation should transcend skin color and be rooted in mutual values and ideals.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has also weighed in on the issue, urging elected officials in New York to recognize the harmful effects of promoting division among US-based Guyanese, particularly those of African descent.

As Guyanese officials and leaders advocate for unity and solidarity, citizens are encouraged to stand together against racism and divisive rhetoric, fostering a society built on inclusivity, respect, and shared values.
