Kunjaz Steel Pan Group to Showcase Guyanese Talent in Canada

Local steel pan sensation, Kunjaz, is gearing up to represent Guyana in Canada, with a spirited performance planned for the nation’s 58th independence anniversary celebrations.

At the “Pan is We: Kunjaz and Friends” musical fundraiser held at the National Cultural Centre, scores of steel pan enthusiasts gathered to support local talent.

The event featured a lineup of talented performers, including Sean Bhola, D Tales, Roy Stewart, OKC, Carlvin Burnette and Nekeita, Simeon, Daniela Araujo, Faith Corrica, Samuel Medas, the National Dance Company, and closing performer Timothy Roberts.

Manager of the Kunjaz Steel Ensemble, Jovanka Williams, expressed gratitude for the pro-bono support received, emphasizing its importance in enabling the group to participate in the upcoming celebrations in Ottawa and Ontario, Canada.

Williams explained that the invitation from the Guyanese High Commission in Canada presents a valuable opportunity for Kunjaz to showcase their talent on an international stage.

The 12-member team, comprising nine steel pan players, is poised to represent Guyana with pride.

Reflecting on the overwhelming support received for the fundraiser, Williams expressed appreciation for the community’s backing, highlighting the success of the event as a pilot project for future endeavors.

As Kunjaz prepares to embark on this exciting journey to Canada, they see it as a stepping stone for even greater accomplishments, with plans for innovative concepts and performances in the pipeline.

With their sights set on making a lasting impression on the international stage, Kunjaz is poised to shine a spotlight on the rich musical heritage of Guyana.
