High Turnout Despite Strike: Teachers Show Resilience in Georgetown Schools

By Nakasia Logan

Despite the planned strike by the Guyana Teacher’s Union, teachers in Georgetown turned out to their respective schools today, demonstrating resilience and commitment to their students.

NCN’s News Team visited several schools and observed high attendance and dedicated teaching efforts.

At the Bishops High School, Headmistress Shandrina Welcome-Lee reported a significant turnout of teachers, expressing gratitude for their commitment to their students.

She emphasized that the teachers’ voluntary presence is commendable and reflects their dedication to the students’ education.

Welcome-Lee highlighted the importance of this term for students, especially with examinations approaching, underscoring the critical role teachers play in ensuring academic success.

Similarly, Queens College reported a 100% turnout of teachers, indicating strong support for educational activities despite the strike call.

However, at St. Roses High School, a 50% turnout was reported, suggesting varying levels of participation among schools.

At Saint Stanislaus College, the turnout was also notably high, reaffirming the dedication of educators to their students’ learning and development.

The strike action, initiated by the Guyana Teacher’s Union, stems from the union’s claim that the government has failed to engage in meaningful collective bargaining.

The strike is currently in the form of a “stay-at-home” action for the next two days.

As teachers continue to navigate these challenges, their commitment to education remains steadfast, ensuring that students receive the support and guidance they need during these uncertain times.
