Guyana Girl Guides Association Marks 100th Anniversary with Empowerment Celebration

By Nakasia Logan

The Guyana Girl Guides Association (GGGA) observed its 100th anniversary on Saturday, celebrating a century of empowering girls and young women nationwide.

Established in 1924, the GGGA has been instrumental in fostering leadership, mentorship, and essential life skills among its members.

During the centennial event, Mignon Bowen-Phillips, the wife of Prime Minister Mark Phillips, emphasized the significant role played by the association in shaping the lives of countless young Guyanese women.

She stressed the importance of women using their voices to advocate for their beliefs and creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all women.

Mrs. Bowen-Phillips highlighted the expansion of the GGGA’s influence over the years, with Girl Scout groups now present in several regions across the country.

This growth reflects the dedication of numerous women who have developed programs tailored to meet the evolving needs of young women in Guyana.

Despite its achievements, the GGGA faces challenges in reaching girls in remote areas like the hinterland.

However, the association remains committed to increasing awareness of its benefits and empowering girls in disadvantaged communities.

The GGGA is celebrating its centenary under the theme “100 Years of Supporting Girls and Young Women Through Love, Empowerment, Education, and Recreation.”

This theme underscores the association’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of female leaders.

The anniversary celebration was attended by a diverse audience, with Mrs. Mignon Bowen-Phillips delivering remarks that highlighted the GGGA’s remarkable journey and its ongoing impact on the lives of girls and young women across Guyana.
