GFS to Introduce Ambulance Services in Region Six

By Nakasia Logan

In a proactive move to bolster emergency response capabilities and enhance the safety of residents in Region Six, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is gearing up to introduce National Emergency Medical Services.

This initiative will entail the recruitment and training of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), with a recruitment drive scheduled to kick off this weekend in the Rose Hall area.

Divisional Officer of Administration, Haimchandra Persaud, revealed this development during a recent segment on Radio Eve Leary.

He emphasized the importance of expanding ambulance services to Region Six to address the growing needs of the community and better handle emergency situations.

Persaud highlighted past challenges faced by the fire service, particularly instances where they arrived at a scene but lacked the means to provide proper medical care.

This initiative aims to bridge that gap and ensure prompt medical assistance to those in need.

The National Emergency Medical Services, initially revitalized in November 2016, primarily serviced the Georgetown area with over 100 trained EMTs.

However, recognizing the need for broader coverage, the services have gradually extended to other regions, including Melanie in Region Four, La Grange in Region Three, and Onverwagt in Region Five.

The strategic rollout of ambulance services aligns with the Guyana Fire Service’s broader vision and strategic plan, demonstrating a commitment to improving emergency response capabilities nationwide.

As the recruitment drive gets underway, individuals from the Rose Hall area are encouraged to participate, with the aim of contributing to the expansion of ambulance services and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in Region Six.
