President Dr. Irfaan Ali has issued a strong warning that public health officials will be held accountable as the government intensifies efforts to deliver a world-class healthcare system across Guyana.
Speaking at a meeting with senior leaders of the public health sector, the President stressed that hospitals and health centres must maintain more than 90 percent availability of essential medicines and medical supplies throughout the year.
He announced that a new national inventory management system, set to become the sole operational platform from July 1, will enhance transparency, efficiency, and oversight in the distribution and monitoring of medical supplies.
President Ali cautioned that any official found bypassing established procedures or standard operating protocols will face disciplinary action.
“We’ve invested in a system now at the MME that has clear SOPs and all the regional health officers, the hospitals, administrators will be held accountable based on that system. Anybody who works outside of that system, outside of the SOPs in that system, you will be sent home,” he said.
He also emphasised that improved customer service, effective facility management, and patient comfort must be central pillars of healthcare delivery.
The Head of State noted that the government has made significant investments in healthcare infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and medical supplies aimed at improving patient outcomes nationwide.
He further disclosed that salary disparities affecting doctors, nurses and consultants are currently under review, with discussions expected to take place within the next two weeks.
President Ali said the overarching goal is to build a trusted, transparent, and accountable healthcare system that consistently delivers high-quality care to all citizens.
