The Ministry of Education on Sunday morning kicked off Education Month 2026 with its “Steps for Education” walk in Georgetown.
Students, teachers, families and other stakeholders turned out for the early-morning activity, which began at Lot 26 Brickdam.
Participants made their way along Camp Street and Carifesta Avenue before ending at the Ministry of Education Ground.
Minister of Education Sonia Parag said the event highlights the role education plays in transforming lives, from classrooms to communities.

She encouraged students to focus not only on academics but also to participate in sports and take advantage of opportunities to develop their talents.
“Our secondary school nationals being held next year, March, and that is going to be the precursor to the Carifta Games, which will also be held in Guyana for the. Well, for the. For the first time. So we’re making history next year. So make sure that when you’re doing the inter school participation that you understand that there is a channel that can take you even further than Guyana and you can actually excel as an athlete,” she said.
The activity also promoted the Ministry’s anti-bullying and anti-violence campaign, with participants urged to become ambassadors for kindness.
Chief Planning Officer Mischka White-Griffith said the walk promotes a healthy lifestyle, which contributes to sharper minds and more productive citizens.
Education Month is being observed under the theme, “From Classrooms to Communities, Education Transforms Lives,” as the 2026–2027 school year gets underway.
