President Irfaan Ali has begun a three-day State Visit to Qatar, where his engagements are focused heavily on strengthening economic ties between Georgetown and Doha.

Shortly after arriving, President Ali met with Mohamed Said Al-Sowaidi, Chief Executive Officer of the Qatar Investment Authority.

The President says the QIA is already undertaking a major hospitality and real estate project in Guyana and is examining other investment collaborations.

President Ali met with Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, to discuss the potential for collaboration in the energy sector.

The engagement forms part of ongoing bilateral discussions between the two governments.

During a meeting with the Qatar’s minister of finance, discussions focused on several areas of cooperation including possible collaboration between the Qatar Development Bank and the Guyana Development Bank, an investment fund and other opportunities.

The President also found time for a sporting connection, meeting former Australian cricketer Brett Lee and former professional footballer Tim Cahill in Doha.

The Guyanese Head of State says they discussed their work in sports and talent development.

The engagements come as Guyana continues to position itself as an investment destination, while seeking to deepen relations with Qatar beyond the energy sector.

President Ali is expected to hold several other high-level bilateral engagements during the remainder of the State Visit.
