The government has invested more than $31.5 billion in the construction, renovation, and maintenance of schools across Guyana from 2020 to 2024.
This continued effort underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing access to education and improving the country’s educational infrastructure, according to Minister of Education Priya Manickchand.
Minister Manickchand highlighted that 37 schools are currently under construction or undergoing maintenance, many of which were neglected during the previous administration.
The ongoing projects span across the country, with notable work being done in regions that previously lacked sufficient educational facilities.
The government has also extended the timeline for the completion of the Christ Church Secondary School, which is currently behind schedule.
The school is expected to be completed by March 2025, after a 10-month delay.
In addition to improving schools, the government is expanding education opportunities in remote areas.
When the PPP/C took office in 1992, there were only three secondary schools in the hinterland regions.
Since then, the government has built an additional 14 schools and is currently constructing and expanding nursery and primary schools, as well as ten dormitories nationwide.
Minister Manickchand emphasized that, under the leadership of President Irfaan Ali, more schools have been built in the past few years than in the entire history of Guyana, reflecting the government’s commitment to educational development across the country.
