Vocational Training Launched in Massara and Toca: A Step Towards Community Development

By Josiah Williams | September 26, 2024

For the first time, residents of Massara and Toca in the Northern Rupununi have benefitted from vocational training within their communities, marking a significant step towards local capacity building.

Twenty individuals from both villages completed courses in General Building Construction and Welding and Fabrication, facilitated by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).

Previously, training opportunities were held at the Bina Hill Institute in Annai, but the challenges of traveling from remote villages prompted the government to bring training directly to the residents.

This initiative ensures that such training programs will continue in the future.

Graduates of the program expressed their enthusiasm about the skills they acquired, emphasizing how the training would positively impact their lives.

One graduate noted her newfound abilities in bricklaying, measurement, and the use of various tools.

Another graduate shared his aspirations of leading a construction company, expressing a desire for further learning in the field.

Although ten participants from Toca Village were unable to attend the graduation ceremony, a representative from their village council collected their certificates on their behalf.

Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of both individuals and communities.

He emphasized the importance of developing local skills to reduce dependency on external labor for construction projects.

Looking ahead, the Minister announced plans for another training program focusing on commercial food preparation in Massara for the upcoming year.

He encouraged the graduates to be innovative and to utilize social media platforms to showcase their skills and market their services.

This initiative is a crucial step toward fostering self-sufficiency and empowerment in the communities of Massara and Toca.
