Guyana’s women’s hockey team settled for a draw against the host team Bermuda during the Pan American Hockey Challenges Series held in Pembroke on Tuesday evening.
Guyana initially took the lead with a penalty corner goal from Sarah Klautky in the first quarter.
However, Bermuda’s Georgia Harris equalized just before halftime, keeping the match competitive as both teams vied for a place in the final.
Following this result, Guyana remains in second place on the leaderboard, having recorded one win and two draws from three matches.
They trail the tournament favorites, Mexico, who have secured two victories.
Looking ahead, Guyana faces Mexico on Friday in a crucial match that will determine which team advances to the final.
Mexico is currently ranked 37th in the world, while Guyana holds the 68th position.
Head coach Phillip Fernandes reflected on the challenging game, noting that the second half featured subpar performance from his team, which ultimately cost them the win.
He expressed a desire to approach the match against Mexico from a stronger position to allow for a more strategic play.
Guyana is aiming to qualify for the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Cup scheduled in Uruguay in 2025, as well as for next year’s Hockey World Cup.
The challenge series is set to conclude on September 28.
