Cervical cancer is a serious health issue, being the second most prevalent cancer in Guyana. However, if diagnosed and treated early, it is highly curable.
Dr. Lachmie Lall, the Director of the Non-Communicable Disease Programme at the Ministry of Health, is advocating for women aged 21 to 65 to undergo regular screenings.
During a recent segment of Health Matters, Dr. Lall emphasized that early detection is crucial for effective treatment, which can significantly enhance the quality of life for affected individuals.
Most cervical cancer cases are linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV), the same virus responsible for genital warts.
Dr. Lall also highlighted common symptoms of cervical cancer, noting that many women often seek examinations when these symptoms arise.
To facilitate screenings, the Ministry of Health has introduced a Cervical Cancer Screening Programme, which offers an $8,000 voucher to assist women in accessing these vital services.
Women are encouraged to take advantage of this initiative and prioritize their health by getting screened.
