Guyana Hockey Team Prepares for PAHF Challenge Series

The Guyana Hockey Board has announced its final squad for the 2024 Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Challenge Series, scheduled to be held in Hamilton, Bermuda, later this month.

This tournament is a key qualifier for the PAHF Cup, which will take place in Uruguay in 2025, and offers Guyana a chance to advance to the World Cup.

Guyana’s team, despite being the lowest-ranked competitor, is set to face formidable opponents including Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Jamaica, and Bermuda.

Head Coach Phillip Fernandes acknowledges the challenges posed by these seasoned teams but remains hopeful about his squad’s chances.

Preparation for the tournament has been challenging due to limited access to practice facilities.

The team faced difficulties with the unavailability of grass fields, which impacted their training regimen.

However, recent improvements in access to suitable practice areas have bolstered the team’s confidence.

The current squad includes five players from the last PAHF Challenge in 2011—goalkeeper Alysa Xavier, Gabriella Xavier, Trisha Woodroffe, Samantha Fernandes, and Chantelle Fernandes.

New additions to the team are Princessa Wilkie, Sarah Klautky, Abosaide Cadogan, Tekeisha Deleon, Carolyn Deane, Makeda Harding, Kirsten Gomes, Kezia Chinian, Makaylah Poole, Clayza Bobb, and Madison Fernandes.

Guyana’s team will begin their campaign with a match against Peru on Saturday, September 21.

The PAHF Challenge Series is a significant opportunity for the Guyanese squad as they strive to make their mark on the international stage.
