Government’s Road Infrastructure Plan Advancing According to Schedule, Minister Edghill Reports

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill has provided an update on the government’s plan to modernize and transform Guyana’s road infrastructure, stating that the initiative is progressing on schedule.

Minister Edghill revealed that approximately 700 contracts have been awarded for the construction of roads in almost all regions of the country.

In a recent appearance on the Dr. Randy Persaud Show, Minister Edghill shared that around 2,500 community roads have been constructed along the East and West Bank of Demerara, as well as the East and West Coast of Demerara, in just a few months.

Additionally, 62 concrete roads are under construction in Linden, and there has been significant improvement in the hinterland road network project.

These roads, part of the Public Works Ministry’s 2023 work program, play a crucial role in advancing various sectors, including health, agriculture, transport, and logistics.

Minister Edghill emphasized that the road networks are not only enhancing transportation but also opening new opportunities for residential and commercial lands, contributing to the government’s housing drive.

The budget for the transformative roads and bridges initiative in 2023 is over 136 billion dollars, aiming to enhance the transportation sector and alleviate traffic congestion.

The allocated funds include upgrades to the Corentyne Highway from Palmyra to Crabwood Creek, the East Bank Highway from Prospect to Timehri, and the rehabilitation of the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
