NCN Editor participates in China International Press programme

News Editor and Anchor at the National Communications Network (NCN), Samuel Sukhnandan is participating in the China-Latin America & the Caribbean (LAC) Press Centre 2022 programme.

Sukhnandan is one of two Guyanese journalists selected to participate. The other individual is the Newsroom’s, Fareeza Haniff.

The fellowship is being held under the China International Press Communication Centre (CIPCC) and spearheaded by the Government of China through the Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA).

It brings together over 20 editors, mid-career journalists, and senior news correspondents from Guyana, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and Venezuela, among others.

The CIPCC will hold lectures, conduct journalism training and organize internship with Chinese media for each of the participants. Visits to various Chinese provinces and tourist attraction sites will also be facilitated.

Besides training classes, the CIPCC fellows will have the opportunity to interview officials of relevant government ministries, agencies and enterprises, and cover major domestic and diplomatic events in China.

Sukhnandan said he looks forward to the opportunity to learn more about the economic, political and social transformation of China, and to strengthen his skills in the field of media and communication.

“China is undoubtedly a world leader in many aspects and there is a lot to learn from its experience. I look forward to this and the chance to work with the Chinese media to learn their techniques and best practices,” he remarked.

Sukhnandan said he also looks forward to learning about the cultural aspects of China, and hopes to return with basic fluency in Mandarin.

He notes that “China boasts a rich and profound culture, so I am excited to learn the basic pieces of knowledge about this in the coming months.”

A similar programme was hosted in 2018, as part of efforts to build better relations with the Caribbean region.

This year’s programme will examine China-LAC relations in greater depth, with the aim of enhancing the friendship and cooperation between the two sides.

Guyana and China are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations this year.
