The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) issued a clarification following a publication in the Guyana Times, stating that the agency does not sell scales and cannot mandate businesses to provide discounts to consumers.
Lloyd David, the Corporate Communications Head of GNBS, emphasized that the agency’s primary responsibility is to verify all measuring instruments used in trade to ensure consumer protection and fairness in commercial transactions.
He clarified that GNBS does not engage in the sale of scales or other measuring instruments and therefore cannot enforce discounts from businesses.
According to David, the GNBS conducts verifications of measuring instruments used in trade twice annually, from January to March and July to September.
However, vendors and users who miss these verification periods can still have their measuring instruments verified at GNBS offices located nationwide.
David urged citizens to look for the GNBS certification sticker on scales when making purchases in shops, markets, or supermarkets across the country.
He advised consumers not to purchase items weighed on instruments lacking the GNBS verification sticker and encouraged them to report such instances to GNBS for appropriate action.
In conclusion, GNBS stressed the importance for importers, dealers, and users of measuring instruments in trade to ensure their instruments are verified (stamped) by GNBS before selling or using them.
