Nicolette Fernandes became the first Guyanese, male or female, to win a Pan American Squash Championship title, when she defeated Colombian Laura Tovar on Wednesday evening in straight sets 11 – 9, 11 – 4 and 11 – 5.
Tovar was the #1 seed.
Fernandes, one of the most decorated players in the Americas, has never won the women’s singles event at the Pan AM Squash championships.
In 2006, the former World #19 ranked Fernandes finished second to Mexico’s Samantha Teran when the tournament was hosted in Colombia.
Fernandes and the rest of the Guyana Squad, will now prepare for the team segment of the Championships, beginning today and concluding Saturday.
