Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill storms into the Round-of-16 at the 2021 Latin American singles and mixed doubles Olympic qualification table tennis tournament in Argentina, after overcoming Paraguay’s Leyla Gomez four sets to one.
After Edghill won the first three sets 11 – 6, 11 – 7 and 17 – 15, Gomez came back in the fourth 7 – 11, but the Guyanese was too good in the final set and won it 11 – 5. She will next face Mabelyn Enriquez to keep her Tokyo Olympics dreams alive.
Meanwhile, Shemar Britton’s quest to qualify for games in Tokyo in the Men’s singles event, came to halt when he went down to Colombia’s Alexander Echavarria two sets to four. Britton fell 5 – 11 in the first set, but bounce-back to take the second 11 – 2. However, he would lose back-to-back sets 9 – 11, 6 – 11, before taking the fifth 11 – 8. The Colombian would close things out in the sixth 4 – 11. Britton will now focus on the mixed doubles on Saturday, where he’s teaming up with Edghill.
