Guyana is ready to improve relations with Venezuela, within the construct of respect for this country’s sovereignty.
This was conveyed by Prime Minister Mark Phillips during a meeting with Venezuela’s Ambassador to Guyana, Carlos Amador Perez Silva.
The two met to discuss ways of enhancing bilateral relations.
The Prime Minister also assured the Ambassador that Guyana would honour its obligation under international humanitarian laws, concerning refugees to this country.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received a letter from the Registrar of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advising that the Venezuelan government has submitted a Preliminary Objections to the admissibility of the case before the court regarding the arbitral award of October 3, 1899.
What this means is that the current proceedings will have to be suspended until the ICJ rules on their preliminary objections.
Guyana will submit its observations as soon as the court advises of a time.
