Strengthening Agricultural Ties: Jamaica and Guyana

Jamaica and Guyana are poised to bolster their cooperation in agriculture and various other sectors, as highlighted by Jamaica’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining during his visit to Guyana for the FAO conference.

One significant aspect of their collaboration is in aquaculture and youth development, with discussions underway to expand partnerships between the two CARICOM nations.

Notably, Jamaica currently sources 90% of its rice consumption from Guyana, underscoring the existing strong ties between the two countries.

Minister Floyd Green of Jamaica expressed optimism about the ongoing dialogue with Guyana’s Agriculture Minister, outlining several areas for potential collaboration.

Under the 25 by 2025 agenda, Jamaica has devised a Regional Youth Strategy aimed at involving more young people in the agricultural sector.

This strategy includes initiatives to engage secondary school students, fostering a new generation of agricultural leaders.

As the 38th FAO Regional conference concludes after four days of intensive discussions, both countries are committed to strengthening their partnership for mutual benefit.

The next conference is slated for 2026, providing a platform for further collaboration and development in the agricultural arena.

With shared goals and a commitment to regional cooperation, Jamaica and Guyana are poised to enhance their agricultural ties, contributing to sustainable development and prosperity in the Caribbean region.
