Guyana is ramping up its push to become a regional energy powerhouse, with President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali signalling strong interest in teaming up with neighbouring Suriname to jointly unlock natural gas resources.
Speaking at the opening of the fifth Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, President Irfaan Ali reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening cross-border energy ties as plans move ahead for a second gas-to-energy project in Berbice near the Suriname border.
Since returning to office in September 2025, he has accelerated efforts to expand Guyana’s natural gas infrastructure, positioning Berbice as a future industrial hub. The proposed facility, he said, will be supported by a deepwater port to drive manufacturing and attract major investment.
“And already we are gearing up for that development. We are gearing up for the interconnectivity with Brazil and the rest of the region. That is why we have the Expressions of Interest out for a new international airport at Lethem and one at Rose Hall in Region 6,” he said.
President Ali made it clear that regional integration remains central to the vision, stressing that investors are awaiting key decisions on a joint Guyana-Suriname gas initiative.
He notes that with Guyana’s oil and gas sector rapidly transforming over the past decade, the country is now looking beyond production to building domestic capacity, meeting local energy demand while positioning itself to supply the wider Caribbean and Latin American markets.
“We are looking at Berbice. We are going to announce very soon the development plan that would include optimising the onshore opportunity for gas while at the same time monetising in the fastest possible time that brings in all the opportunity for LNG,” he further disclosed.
With major discoveries and exploration activity also unfolding across the border in Suriname, President Ali said the timing is ideal for collaboration, describing Guyana as a ready and reliable partner with expansion plans already in motion.
