Building on the absence of major flooding in Region Six despite recent heavy rainfall, Member of Parliament Zamal Hussain has assured that measures are in place to reduce the risk of potential flooding during the upcoming May–June rainy season.

During an interview with NCN News, MP Hussain said the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), has been working assiduously to ensure that all canals and internal drains are properly cleared.

Against that backdrop, each NDC in Region Six recently benefitted from mini excavators, an intervention the MP described as excellent, noting that it contributed to the absence of flooding in residential areas. In farming communities, he added that more than 100 canals, both primary and secondary, were cleared.

“We are trying our best to ensure that we put the necessary interventions to make sure that we have maximum. So, drainage and irrigation has improved tremendously in the region,” he said.

MP Hussain noted that sluices were maintained, while amphibious excavators were deployed to carry out works at outfalls.

For the upcoming rainy period, he said efforts are being intensified to further clear canals.

“The Ministry of Agriculture too has intervened with pumps in Crabwood Creek, No. 73, and the other areas too so they are working to ensure that we put in mobile pumps that can assist with faster drainage in the system,” he added.

The MP also urged residents and farmers to play their part in helping to prevent flooding.
