The Ministry of Labour’s initiative to observe Occupational Safety & Health Day received overwhelming support from stakeholders as hundreds participated in the OSH walk.

The walk, starting from the Ministry of Labour’s Brickdam office and concluding at the Square of the Revolution, aimed to promote workplace safety, emphasizing its critical role in protecting employees from accidents, injuries, and harmful exposures.

This year’s theme, “We are running out of time: ensuring safe and healthy work now in a changing climate,” highlighted the urgency of ensuring safe working conditions amidst environmental challenges.

Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, lauded the significant turnout, emphasizing the growing awareness and collaboration between the ministry and stakeholders in prioritizing workplace safety and health.

Stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, including Errol LaCruz, Chief Statistician at the Bureau of Statistics, and Yonda Heywood, HSSE Supervisor at Massy Distribution, shared insights on the importance of such initiatives and their impact on workplace practices.

Throughout the month, the Labour Ministry organized similar walks across different administrative regions, complemented by sensitization and training sessions.

These efforts aimed to educate employers and employees on key safety practices outlined in the OSH Act, Chapter 99:06 of the Laws of Guyana.

The successful OSH walk reflects a collective commitment to fostering a culture of safety and well-being in Guyana’s workplaces, with stakeholders actively engaged in promoting and upholding occupational safety and health standards.
