In a move to bolster Guyana’s agricultural sector, the Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission to commence the construction of a Food Hub along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
The construction of this food hub is a strategic endeavor aimed at showcasing Guyana’s pivotal role and capacity in managing the regional food sector.
While the Guyana-Barbados food terminal is being developed in Barbados, the establishment of this local food hub underscores Guyana’s commitment to becoming the leading exporter of agricultural produce in the region.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha shared updates on this significant project, revealing that survey works are currently underway at the Yarrowkabra location.
This development aligns with the government’s vision to enhance agricultural infrastructure and promote sustainable food production practices.
Minister Mustapha also highlighted the government’s ambitious agenda to reduce the country’s food import bill by 25% by the year 2025.
He expressed optimism about Guyana’s progress toward this goal, citing advancements made in agricultural production and the strengthening of local food systems.
By decreasing food imports, Guyana aims to achieve greater food security, foster technical cooperation among CARICOM member states, and eliminate trade barriers.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing food sovereignty and promoting economic resilience in the agriculture sector.
As surveying works continue and plans for the Food Hub take shape, the Ministry of Agriculture remains steadfast in its efforts to drive agricultural development and support the growth of Guyana’s agri-business sector.
