Today in Linden, Region 10, midwives from across Guyana gathered to kick off the celebration of International Day of the Midwives with a symbolic march through the central business district.
The event, themed “Midwives Save Lives,” aimed to raise awareness about the vital role midwives play in healthcare systems worldwide.
Amidst chants of “Midwives save lives, Who saves lives? Midwives,” the procession made its way through the streets, drawing attention to the contributions of midwives and their importance in ensuring safe childbirth and maternal health.
Jennifer Melville-Nelson, Secretary of the Linden Midwives Association, highlighted the significance of the day’s activities, emphasizing the need to honor and recognize midwives for their dedication and commitment.
Established in 1992 by the International Confederation of Midwives, International Day of the Midwife is celebrated annually on May 5th.
This year’s theme, “Sustainable Midwifery: Caring for Tomorrow’s World,” underscores the importance of adopting sustainable practices to safeguard the well-being of both mothers and infants while minimizing environmental impact.
Sister Nelson expressed the enthusiasm of midwives in Guyana for this yearly observance, noting that it is a joyous occasion for them to come together and celebrate their profession.
The celebration aims to promote sustainable midwifery practices that prioritize the health of mothers and children and contribute to a healthier future for generations to come.
As midwives continue to play a crucial role in maternal and infant healthcare globally, events like the “Midwives Save Lives” march serve as a reminder of their invaluable contributions to society.
