Guyana’s commitment to fostering Indigenous Tourism has garnered international recognition at the 4th edition of the World Travel Market Latin America Responsible Tourism Awards.
The country received the prestigious award in the category of ‘Best Initiatives for Indigenous Communities and/or Traditional Communities.’
This acknowledgment highlights Guyana’s efforts to reshape its tourism sector by promoting eco-tourism in various indigenous communities and harnessing their existing tourism potential.
The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) has been actively collaborating with community leaders and residents to enhance the tourist experience in these areas.
This collaborative approach not only boosts employment opportunities but also generates revenue through tourist attractions.
Kamrul Baksh, Director of GTA, expressed his pride in receiving this award, stating that it reflects the outstanding work being done in the tourism sector.
Baksh further elaborated that Guyana’s tourism model stands out globally due to its unique approach, setting it apart from many other countries.
In addition to this recent accolade, Guyana was previously awarded Destination of the Year in the Ecological Tourism category.
Minister Oneidge Walrond was also recognized as Woman Tourism Minister of the Year – South America, further solidifying the country’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
This recognition underscores Guyana’s dedication to promoting responsible tourism and preserving its rich cultural heritage while contributing to the socio-economic development of indigenous communities.
