GPL Prepares for Power Ship Arrival

By Saskia Warrick

Preparatory works are currently underway to facilitate the connection of the 36 Megawatts Power Ship, expected to arrive on May 1 and become operational by May 8.

GPL has initiated efforts to swiftly integrate the vessel into the national grid.

The transmission line setup involves three key sections: the eastern segment of Transmission Line L21, linking the power ship to the Cane Field Power Station; the western segment, connecting to the Onverwagt Substation on the West Coast of Berbice; and separate interconnections onto these two lines from the vessel itself.

Ryan Ross, GPL’s Divisional Director for Engineering Services, emphasizes the importance of these preparations, including considerations for the construction of a substation.

Crucially, the government reassures consumers that they will not incur any additional costs for the power ship, which is being rented for the next two years.

This assurance comes directly from Hon. Bharat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the PPP/C.

With these upcoming power solutions, GPL will be able to conduct regular maintenance on at least 10 MW of capacity, ensuring the reliability of the power supply amid increasing demands.

As Guyana advances towards greater energy security and efficiency, GPL remains committed to providing reliable and sustainable power to its citizens.
