Government Pursues Additional Power Supply, Says Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo

By Samuel Sukhnandan

The government is taking steps to enhance the national grid’s power capacity to meet the growing demands across the country.

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Vice President, announced this initiative during his weekly press conference at Freedom House.

To address immediate energy needs, the government has secured a power ship rental agreement that will provide an additional 36 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the national grid for the next two years.

Dr. Jagdeo expressed optimism that the integration of the power ship into the grid will alleviate the ongoing challenges of frequent blackouts experienced nationwide.

While the power ship’s contribution is significant, Dr. Jagdeo revealed that the government is actively exploring further options to augment the country’s power supply.

This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to addressing electricity issues comprehensively.

Dr. Jagdeo acknowledged the disruptive impact of persistent power outages on citizens and assured the public of the government’s determination to resolve the country’s electricity challenges.

He emphasized that the forthcoming Gas-to-Energy facility, once operational, will double the electricity generating capacity and substantially reduce costs.

The Gas-to-Energy facility represents a significant milestone in Guyana’s energy sector, promising improved reliability and affordability of electricity for citizens across the nation.
