The long-standing issue of vendors encumbering Demico House in Georgetown has seen significant progress as the Georgetown City Council conducted a swift operation to dismantle and remove the vendor stalls from the surrounding pavement.
This action came two weeks after Banks DIH obtained a court order to have the vendors removed.
City Engineer Colvern Venture affirmed the council’s commitment to upholding the court order, with plans to deploy City Police to prevent vendors from returning to the area.
Around 20 individuals received notice letters to vacate, although the decision was met with resistance from the vendors.
Banks DIH Group Chairman Clifford Reis highlighted the impact of the vendors on sales, emphasizing the need for their removal.
The High Court, responding to Banks DIH’s legal action, ordered the removal of all structures and vendors surrounding Demico House, along with similar orders won by Shamdas Kirpalani and Muneshwers Limited against vendors.
The vendors, who sold a variety of goods including food, clothing, shoes, and vegetables, had encroached upon the vicinity of Demico House for several years, impacting the operations of surrounding businesses.
