The National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue will witness thrilling basketball action today as four formidable teams, namely North Ruimveldt Ravens, Lenora D-Up Rising Stars, Black Caimans, and Wortmanville Pacesetters, prepare to battle it out on the court.

The GABA U23 Tournament, featuring twelve teams divided into two groups (A and B), is in full swing, with tonight’s matchups showcasing the talents of emerging players from Lenora D-Up Rising Stars against North Ruimveldt Ravens, and Black Caimans against Wortmanville Pacesetters.

These four teams are set to make their debut in the prestigious 2024 GABA Club Championship.

Jermaine Slater, President of the Georgetown Basketball Association (GABA), expressed satisfaction with the tournament’s progress, highlighting the platform it provides for young players to showcase their skills and potentially transition into the upcoming One Guyana League season.

“The youth version of the One Guyana League serves as a building ground for our basketball talent. Some of these players may become available for the new season, making this tournament instrumental in talent development,” Slater remarked.

He further noted the encouraging progress seen in the standard of play among the participating teams.

Slater emphasized the importance of fundamental training sessions for players and commended teams for their dedication to honing their skills, attributing the tournament’s success to their hard work and commitment.

“So far, it’s been surprisingly good. The youths playing in this tournament demonstrate a solid understanding of the game, and the fundamentals are evident in their performance,” Slater added.

The GABA U23 Tournament, which commenced on April 27, is scheduled to run until June 22.

Excitement continues to build as the competition intensifies, with three games already played and notable victories secured by the Meadow Brook Nets, Kwakwani Untouchables, and Cummingsburg Bounty Colts.

As the tournament progresses, basketball enthusiasts eagerly anticipate more electrifying matchups and outstanding displays of skill from the talented young athletes taking part.
