GABA President Optimistic About U23 Basketball Tournament

By Tyriq Walters

The ongoing GABA U23 club championship has sparked optimism among basketball enthusiasts, with the President of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Jermaine Slater, expressing confidence in the talent on display.

As the tournament progresses, Slater encourages players to showcase their skills, emphasizing that standout performances could lead to national team selection.

He highlights the importance of the tournament as an opportunity for players to assess their strengths and weaknesses and improve their game for potential national trials.

According to Slater, several players have already caught his eye, with at least six individuals showing promise for national-level representation.

He believes that with further development, these players could become valuable assets for Guyana’s basketball team.

When questioned about the quality of play in the league so far, Slater commended the level of basketball displayed by the youths.

Despite the lack of recent leagues, he noted that players have demonstrated a solid understanding of the game and have shown proficiency in fundamental skills.

The GABA U23 club championship, featuring eight teams, is sponsored by Wilson’s Plumbing Services and General Supplies and supported by the National Sports Commission.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes are on the budding talents, with hopes high for the emergence of players who can contribute significantly to Guyana’s basketball scene.
