In a heartbreaking incident in Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, a family of seven is left grappling with immense loss after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their home and multimillion-dollar business.

The devastating ordeal unfolded when an explosion was heard in the upper flat of the building, which housed three bedrooms.

Within moments, the structure was engulfed in flames, causing extensive damage and leaving the occupants homeless.

Mahendra Latchman, a 27-year-old mechanic and one of the occupants, recounted the harrowing experience.

He had left home briefly to test drive a vehicle he had recently repaired when he received a frantic call from his wife about the fire.

Rushing back, he was met with the sight of his family’s home consumed by flames, prompting him to immediately search for his loved ones.

Meanwhile, Mahendra’s father, Suresh Latchman, had been away transacting business in Georgetown when he received the devastating news.

Despite his absence, he was deeply shaken by the tragedy unfolding at his home.

Divisional Fire Officer Kirkland Harry confirmed that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with the exact origin yet to be determined.

The loss suffered by the Latchman family is immeasurable, not only in terms of property damage but also in the emotional toll it has taken on them.

As they grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event, the community extends its support and solidarity to help them rebuild their lives.
