Despite ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, accidents remain a persistent challenge in Guyana, prompting experts to advocate for better policies and technological advancements to mitigate risks.
During the “Road Safety and You” program, Coordinator of the Guyana National Road Safety Council (GNRSC), Ramona Doorgen, emphasized the need for companies in Guyana to establish robust road safety policies for their drivers.
She highlighted that approximately 75% of road users are company drivers, underlining the critical role that corporate policies play in promoting safer driving practices.
Doorgen stressed the importance of defensive driving certification and proper training for truck drivers to ensure compliance with safety standards.
President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI), Kester Hutson, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the urgency of adopting advanced technology in the national road safety system.
He highlighted the potential of digitalization to bridge existing gaps and improve efficiency in road safety measures.
Hutson underscored that embracing technology would elevate Guyana’s standards and enhance its reputation on the global stage.
Technological innovations such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), vehicle connectivity, artificial intelligence, and educational tools were identified as key solutions to enhance road safety.
These advancements have the potential to reduce accidents by improving driver awareness, enhancing vehicle control, and facilitating real-time monitoring of road conditions.
The call for improved road safety measures comes amid growing concerns over the prevalence of road accidents, fueled by factors such as distracted driving, speeding, and non-compliance with traffic regulations.
Experts emphasize the importance of collaborative efforts between stakeholders, including government agencies, private companies, and civil society, to address the root causes of road accidents and create a safer road environment for all.
