Demerara maintained their undefeated streak in the Guyana Cricket Board’s Inter-County Super-50 tournament with a hard-fought victory over Essequibo at the Malteenoes Sports Club Ground.
In a competitive encounter, Demerara batted first and posted a total of 214 runs in 45.4 overs.
Zachary Jodha led the scoring with 40 runs, supported by contributions from Johnathan Van-Lange (29), Sachin Balgobin (28), Alvin Mohabir (26), and Captain Mavindra Dindyal (17).
Despite their efforts, Demerara faced some tight bowling from Essequibo, with Golcharran Chulai (3/34), Mahem Khan (2/43), and Darwin Joseph (2/41) being the pick of the bowlers.
Chasing 215 runs for victory, Essequibo’s batting lineup struggled to find momentum.
Skipper Thaddeus Lovell fought valiantly with a knock of 73 runs, but lacked support from his teammates.
Ultimately, Essequibo fell short of the target, finishing 48 runs behind.
Demerara’s bowling attack, led by Riyad Latiff and Krisna Singh with three wickets each, proved too strong for Essequibo’s batting order.
Following the match, Demerara’s winning captain, Mavindra Dindyal, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance under pressure and expressed the goal of bringing the championship home.
Meanwhile, Essequibo skipper Thaddeus Lovell acknowledged the team’s strong start but lamented the batting department’s inability to capitalize on the opportunity.
In another U-19 match, Berbice secured a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over the GCB select 11.
The action in the Guyana Cricket Board Under-19 tournament continues with more exciting matches scheduled for Tuesday.
