Guyana’s candidate for United Nations Secretary General, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, has outlined an ambitious vision for a stronger, more responsive UN during an interactive dialogue with member states today.
Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN, thanked President Irfaan Ali and the Government of Guyana for her nomination, emphasizing that the next Secretary General must be prepared to navigate a rapidly evolving global landscape.
She acknowledged frustrations among member states about the UN’s current performance but stressed the organization’s deep commitment to reform and revitalization. Drawing on Guyana’s recent experience on the Security Council, Rodrigues-Birkett highlighted the importance of principled, pragmatic leadership to ensure the UN remains fit for purpose.
“The UN 80 reform agenda is an acknowledgement that the UN of today needs to do things differently and better, improving efficiencies in the secretariat how the organisation treats with mandates and the structural alignment of the organisation will together have a positive impact,” she said.
Rodrigues-Birkett reaffirmed the UN’s indispensable role in setting global standards and fostering peace, international cooperation, and development, noting the profound difference its work has made in the lives of people across the world.
“I have presented a vision that builds upon the achievements while responding directly to the challenges we face one that is centered around the UN core principles and purposes, reforming its systems and practices and together with member states rallying towards the goal of a more agile and effective organisation,” she said.
Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations pledged, if appointed Secretary General, to work hand in hand with all 193 member states, staff, sub-regional organisations, civil society, and other stakeholders to achieve the shared objective of a more effective United Nations.
