The Office of the Prime Minister, through its Department of Public Affairs on Sunday hosted a luncheon in recognition of World Press Freedom Day 2026.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips used the occasion to highlight the critical role of the media in Guyana’s democracy, while addressing challenges facing the profession.
PM Phillips underscored the importance of a free and responsible press, describing it as a pillar of democracy and a key driver of accountability and public awareness.

“Foremost among these institutions is the press, not merely as a channel of information, but as a foundational pill of democratic society…whose influence extends beyond reporting into shaping public consciousness, enabling accountability and safeguarding the public interest in every era of our development. The press has played a role of documenting Guyana’s story and influencing its direction,” he said.
As Guyana celebrates 60 years of independence, the Prime Minister reflected on the media’s role in documenting the country’s journey and shaping its development.
He also paid tributes to past and present media workers, while acknowledging the increasingly complex environment journalist now operating marked by rapid digital change and spread of misinformation.
“The relationship between government and media must continue to evolve, fostering constructive engagement, guided by mutual respect and a commitment to national development. As Guyana enters its next chapter beyond 60 years of Independence, the media will remain central to shaping our collective future,” he added.

PM Phillips emphasised that maintaining public trust requires a strong commitment to accuracy, fairness and integrity, while reaffirming government support for free and independent media sector.
He noted that the initiatives such as the Guyana Media and Communications Academy, along with international partnerships, form parts of ongoing efforts to strengthen press freedom locally. World Press Freedom Day is being observed this year under the team ‘Shaping a future at peace, promoting press freedom for human rights, development and security’.
