Mashramani Designer of the Year, Maxi Williams has once again secured the top title, marking his second consecutive win for his creativity in the 2026 Costume and Float Parade.

He attributed his success to prayers and a diligent and hardworking team.

In an exclusive interview with NCN News, Williams, who designed several pieces including entries for the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, said the recognition reflects years of dedication to the Republic celebrations.

I’m very excited about it. It means a lot to me to have such an honour to be called, but most importantly [it] is the recognition, to be recognised for what you love doing and what you are good at doing  and that is something that is very valuable to me,” he said.

He explained that his designs this year drew heavily on Indigenous heritage while incorporating modern creative elements.

With the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs we looked at the traditions, using traditions and blending the future and as you can see throughout the costuming, the totem pole, what is does is a reflection and importance of the first people. What we did was bring that Totem pole alive because the totem poll speaks about the village,” Williams divulged.

Among the other standout costumes were the portrayal of the Kanaima, depicted as a warrior and protector of Indigenous people and their resources.

Another design symbolised the “carrier of tradition,” inspired by the Warishi basket, traditionally used to transport produce.

While grateful for the accolade, the Designer of the Year says he is most thankful for his team, noting that success is impossible without them and that months of working together have made them a family.

Williams also dominated the individual costume categories through the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, winning King and Queen of the Band and Female and Male Individual.

For the small bands he also designed the for the Ministries of Tourism Industry and Commerce, Local Government and regional Development and Ministry of Home Affairs all of which placed 1st to 3rd respectively.

He is now encouraging young creatives to remain committed to their craft putting aside all negative comments and focusing on the task ahead.
