Mammography Machines to Be Installed at Four Regional Hospitals to Improve Breast Cancer Screening

Jan 2, 2025

To strengthen breast cancer screening across the country, the Ministry of Health has procured four mammography machines that will be installed at the New Amsterdam, Linden, Lethem, and Suddie Hospitals.

The move aims to enhance early detection and treatment of breast cancer, the most common cancer among women in Guyana.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, highlighted that last year, 253 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the country.

Currently, only one mammography machine is available at the Georgetown Public Hospital, leaving a significant gap in access to screening for many women, particularly in rural areas.

The new machines are expected to be in place by the end of the year.

In addition to improving access to mammograms, Dr. Anthony emphasized the importance of identifying the specific type of breast cancer each patient has.

This is crucial for tailoring effective treatment plans and ensuring better outcomes.

He assured that with the new equipment, healthcare providers will be able to detect any forms of breast cancer more efficiently.

The Ministry of Health has also reported other cancer diagnoses, including 200 men diagnosed with prostate cancer, 107 women diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 98 cases of colorectal cancer.

The installation of the mammography machines is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to provide better healthcare services across the country, with a focus on early detection and prevention.
