Maureen Hope, the founder of the NGO Youths with Purpose and a dedicated social worker, has been honored with the European Union Delegation’s 2024 Human Rights Award.

The award recognizes her outstanding contributions to empowering youth and supporting women in Crane, West Coast Demerara, where she has worked for over two decades.

At the award reception, EU Ambassador René van Nes commended Hope’s tireless efforts, emphasizing the importance of local partnerships in addressing human rights challenges.

He spoke of the EU’s strong belief in the role of civil society in protecting human rights.

In her speech, an overwhelmed Hope shared that her passion for helping others stems from her own experiences growing up.

She expressed her determination to expand the reach and impact of Youths with Purpose, which has been providing invaluable support to the community.

The EU Human Rights Award, which has been presented annually since 2017, celebrates individuals and organizations making significant contributions to human rights advocacy.

This award further reaffirms the EU’s commitment to supporting civil society and human rights defenders in Guyana.
