In a significant boost for the education sector, teachers in Guyana will see a 27% increase in their salaries over the next three years, along with several additional incentives.

This agreement was formalized today between the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU).

Under the new agreement, teachers will receive:

  • 10% increase in 2024
  • 8% increase in 2025
  • 9% increase in 2026

If public servants’ salary increases exceed these percentages, teachers will receive the difference.

In addition to the salary increases, graduate teachers will see notable adjustments:

  • Doctorate degree holders: 32,000 monthly
  • Master’s degree holders: 22,000 monthly
  • Postgraduate and advanced graduate diploma holders: 7,000 monthly
  • Certificate in Education & Management: 5,000 monthly

Other benefits include:

  • Station allowance increases of up to 108%
  • Hard lying allowances of up to 67%
  • RAI (remote area incentive) increased to 23,000
  • Clothing allowances up by 88%
  • Concessions increased by 50%
  • 100% scholarships annually

For the first time, teachers will be compensated for marking and supervising SBA’s and NGSA Grades 5 and 6 mock exams.

Additionally, teachers re-employed after retirement will be paid at their last salary scale before retirement.

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the education system and supporting teachers.

“We are pleased to offer this holistic package, which will benefit over 13,000 teachers both in the coastal and hinterland regions,” said President Ali.
