15 GPL Employees Certified as Fibre Optic Technicians

Fifteen employees of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) have been certified as Fibre Optic Installers and Technicians after completing a four-week training programme facilitated by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).

The graduation ceremony took place at GPL’s Sophia Training Centre.

The $3.9 million training programme provided these employees with the necessary skills for fibre optic cable repair and maintenance, reducing the company’s reliance on external contractors.

This is expected to enhance efficiency by minimizing downtime and improving response times.

Two of the graduates, Alvin Deonarine and Sunil Goriah, shared that the training has equipped them to maintain GPL’s fibre optic network, which is crucial for communication with remote substations and the control center.

Goriah further emphasized that the company is moving towards handling fibre optic work internally, ensuring quality and reducing the need for oversight.

During the ceremony, Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton encouraged the graduates to keep advancing their careers and to strive for higher goals within the company.

This in-house expertise will allow GPL to perform regular checks and maintenance on its fibre optic cables, contributing to improved service quality.
