Region Ten Chairman, Deron Adams, has called on the Central Government to revisit and implement a 2021 plan aimed at improving drainage in central Linden.
Adams made this request during Thursday’s statutory meeting, addressing the severe flooding that has recently impacted the town.
The recent floods in Linden have caused significant losses for both businesses and residents.
Adams highlighted the necessity of hiring a surveyor to assess the town’s drains and outfalls.
He emphasized that both large and small businesses, including Republic Bank, have been affected by the flooding.
While Adams commended the recent cleaning initiative in the town, he stressed the importance of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) considering the recommendations from the latest assessments.
He believes that more can be done to address the drainage issues if the NDIA establishes an office in the region.
Regional Executive Officer Dwight John informed the meeting that discussions had been held with leaders at the Linden Mayor and Town Council to seek Central Government’s assistance in conducting a comprehensive survey of the town’s drainage systems.
Despite the allocation of $22 million for the construction of an NDIA office in Region Ten, Adams noted that the project was put on hold even after the contract was awarded.
He expressed his view that the presence of an NDIA office would significantly enhance the region’s ability to manage drainage and irrigation issues.
Adams remains optimistic that with the necessary support and resources, Linden can effectively address its drainage challenges and mitigate future flooding.
