President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced a significant housing expansion initiative at Wales on the West Bank of Demerara, aimed at benefiting 20,000 families as part of the government’s ongoing housing expansion program.
During a community engagement session in Leonora and surrounding Region 3 communities, President Ali highlighted that the development at Wales will include not only housing lots but also a new power plant, industrial and manufacturing park, and various infrastructure improvements.
“In this region alone, we will achieve close to 15,000 house lots, and we are opening up the lands in Wales to provide another 20,000 on the West Bank,” stated President Ali.
The ambitious project forms part of broader regional developments that include the construction of the new Demerara River Crossing, Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base, the country’s first artificial island, and enhancements to the Schoonord to Crane highway.
President Ali emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the education sector in the region, with substantial investments in the construction and rehabilitation of schools at all educational levels.
Over $6 billion is allocated for school construction, along with $390 million for textbooks.
During the engagement, President Ali addressed concerns raised by residents, offering immediate solutions to some issues and pledging resolution for others within two weeks.
The initiative underscores the government’s dedication to regional development and improving living standards across Guyana.
