Power generation in Guyana has seen significant improvements with the deployment of a power ship at Everton, Berbice.
Acting CEO of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL), Kesh Nandlall, informed NCN News that the smooth operation of the power ship has led to a notable reduction in power outages across the nation.
The power ship, which was connected to the power grid just over three weeks ago, has added an additional 36 megawatts to the system.
This increase has helped minimize the power outages that plagued the country earlier in the year.
Currently, the power generation capacity stands at approximately 218 megawatts, while the demand is just over 180 megawatts.
Nandlall acknowledged that while some power outages still occur, these are primarily due to network issues rather than insufficient power generation.
The connection of the power ship has allowed for regular maintenance on power engines that were previously overworked due to the lack of sufficient capacity.
This maintenance is crucial for ensuring a more reliable power supply.
Looking ahead, Nandlall confirmed that GPL is making progress in securing an additional 30 to 40 megawatts of power before the end of 2024.
These efforts, along with the anticipated Gas to Energy project slated for 2025, are expected to significantly boost the generation capacity, further stabilizing the power supply in Guyana.
