Seven Disciplines Selected for Inter-Guiana Games 2024

By Eric Collymore

In preparation for the upcoming Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) scheduled to be hosted by French Guiana in October, the Inter-Guiana Games Committee has finalized the selection of seven sports disciplines to be contested.

Following a meeting held in March with governmental authorities and officials from participating territories, it was agreed that the 2024 edition of the Inter-Guiana Games will feature competitions in seven sports disciplines.

These disciplines include athletics, basketball, beach volleyball, chess, futsal, swimming, and table tennis.

The event is scheduled to take place from October 24 to 26.

Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, emphasized that the meeting provided organizers with the necessary time to plan and ensure the success of the event.

Additionally, a virtual meeting scheduled for April 22 among relevant stakeholders aims to further refine the details of the games.

Ninvalle confirmed Guyana’s participation in all seven disciplines and expressed optimism for an improved performance from the team compared to previous years.

He also noted that due to the distance of travel for athletes and officials, the National Sports Commission has arranged for an earlier departure from Guyana.

Highlighting the significance of the event, Ninvalle underscored its role in upholding sport as an integral part of the cultural fabric of the participating territories, reflecting a covenant between these territories and the Government of Guyana.

The Inter-Guiana Games, initially established in 1967, typically involves Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

The previous edition was hosted in Suriname, with Guyana hosting the 2022 edition after a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As preparations continue, anticipation builds for another exciting and competitive edition of the Inter-Guiana Games, fostering camaraderie and sporting excellence among the participating nations.
