President Mohamed Irfaan Ali recently met with factory workers at the Blairmont Sugar Estate on the West Bank of Berbice, where he addressed concerns raised by the workers and outlined the government’s commitment to investing in the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO).

The meeting, part of a series of community engagements in Region Five, provided an opportunity for President Ali to listen to the concerns of residents and offer reassurance regarding government interventions.

During the discussion, factory workers expressed concerns about the supply and quality of sugarcane delivered to the factory, as well as reduced working hours.

In response, President Ali empathized with their plight and emphasized the government’s efforts to boost production and improve conditions within the sugar industry.

President Ali announced plans to cultivate over 5,000 more hectares of land this year, which he believes will lead to increased production, better working conditions, and more job opportunities for workers in the sugar industry.

Efforts are also underway to enhance yields by focusing on cultivating a variety of canes, with a target of achieving close to 140,000 tonnes in the coming year.

Furthermore, President Ali disclosed his intention to convene a meeting with cane harvesters, representatives from the Guyana Agricultural Workers Unit, and officials from various estates.

The goal of this meeting will be to develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at significantly enhancing production and benefiting both the estates and employees.

The engagement with Blairmont Sugar Workers underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing the sugar industry and ensuring the well-being of workers.

President Ali’s proactive approach towards addressing concerns and implementing strategic interventions demonstrates a concerted effort towards sustainable growth and development in Guyana.
