By Eric Collymore

The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) is gearing up to kick off its innovative ‘National Academy and Learn to Box’ programme, commencing on March 25 at the Andrew ‘Six Heads’ Lewis gym in Albouystown.

Scheduled to run for 12 days, the programme will feature technical officers, including coaches and officials, conducting sessions across various locations nationwide.

One of the key components of the initiative involves the introduction of refereeing and judging training for individuals interested in this aspect of the sport.

Overall, the programme aims to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to boxing, encompassing its techniques, rules, and regulations.

GBA President Steve Ninvalle emphasized that the launch of this groundbreaking programme follows the success of the developmental championship held recently.

This championship served as a catalyst for the introduction of the academy project, highlighting the GBA’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering the sport’s growth.

Ninvalle pointed to the exemplary performance of the New Amsterdam Academy in the recent championships, underscoring the association’s proactive approach to supporting grassroots development.

He expressed optimism about the programme’s potential for success and hinted at its integration as a permanent fixture in the GBA’s annual calendar of events.

With plans to extend the programme’s reach to regions across Guyana, including Lethem, Ninvalle reaffirmed the GBA’s dedication to providing accessible opportunities for individuals interested in boxing.

He emphasized the importance of investing in coaching and training resources to ensure the programme’s long-term sustainability and effectiveness.

As the GBA prepares to launch its ‘National Academy and Learn to Box’ programme, anticipation is high for the positive impact it will have on boxing development in Guyana.

By equipping aspiring boxers and officials with the necessary skills and knowledge, the programme aims to contribute to the continued growth and success of the sport nationwide.
