Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, has highlighted the remarkable growth of the aquaculture industry, emphasizing its status as one of the fastest-growing sectors within agriculture.

According to Mustapha, the industry has experienced an impressive expansion, boasting a growth rate exceeding 600% over the past three years.

Speaking at a recent event, Minister Mustapha disclosed that over 90,000 kilograms of brackish water shrimp were produced in January alone.

He expressed optimism that production levels would continue to rise, aiming to surpass 120,000 kilograms monthly with the ongoing expansion of aquaculture projects.

Furthermore, data revealed that Guyana generated approximately $1.3 billion from brackish water shrimp production between January and November 2023, underscoring the significant economic contribution of the aquaculture sector.

Minister Mustapha also addressed the growing interest in employment opportunities within the industry, highlighting its potential for job creation and economic development.

Aligned with President Irfaan Ali’s vision for Guyana to become a major food producer for regional and international markets, Minister Mustapha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing heavily in the agriculture sector.

The goal is to achieve self-sufficiency across all areas of food production, thereby fostering economic growth and prosperity for the nation.
