Mining Conference at University of Guyana Focuses on Reducing Mercury Use

Local and international experts have convened at the University of Guyana for the Gold Mining in Guyana Conference, with a primary focus on mitigating the use of mercury.

The two-day conference brings together experts, researchers, and policymakers in the mining sector to address and discuss ways to mitigate the adverse effects of mining and related harmful practices.

Meanwhile, Darcy Waldron, Head of the Department of Environment at the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), highlighted the efforts to modernize mining in the country.

The GGMC offers a suite of analytical services to the sector, promoting technology for increased efficiency, mineral recovery, and reduced environmental impact.

Waldron also emphasized the GGMC’s comprehensive work, including mining reports, geo-chemical projects covering over half of Guyana’s territory, and the development of Guyana’s geological map.

The conference, held in collaboration with the French National Research Institute on Sustainable Development and WWF Guianas, features presentations from local and international experts in the mining and environmental fields.
